The Quiet Beauty of Station Eleven
I know what you are thinking. There is nothing in this world I want to consume less than a tale of societal collapse that occurs as a result of a flu virus. But Station Eleven has a way of crawling into your heart. It is a portrait of a girl who is surviving despite her trauma. It is about the restorative power of art and the human need to do more than simply survive.
It has made me weep it is so beautiful. You'll recognize the main actress from the absolutely excellent Black Mirror episode "San Junipero". With this as with that she gives her typical amazing performance. But it is the girl who plays the character as a child who really shines. She brings emotional depth and complexity that is always surprising to see in child actors.
I anxiously await this show every week and am so damn happy HBO puts up two at a time. It's a great palate cleanser after you watch whatever the fuck is going on on "And just like that".
